Torn with anguish and alcohol, Canio loses control and any sense of acting as he confronts Nedda and eventuall kills her and her lover.
The Cask of Amontillado - Robert W. Butts: Karole Lewis (Anna), Emily Thompson (Angela), Peter Lewis (John), Brenda Belohoubek (Lisa)
The Cask of Amontillado was inspired by the short story by Edgar Allen Poe. Maestro Butts has updated it to present times. Anna, the long-suffering wife of phlandering John, is throwing a lavish party to which she's invited her ex-husband and his new younger wife Angela. However, John is already up to his old ways and even at the party abandon's his new wife to flirt with Lisa, The Wine Girl. Anna has a plan, however. Her New York apartment is in a very old New York building with basements and sub-basements even the landlord has forgotten. She tempts her ex-husband by playing on his vanity and ego as she proclaims she has found a cask - more like a case - of vintage Amontillado. When he says he must see it to believe it, she explains she has stored in the lowest of all sub-basements. She lures him down and while he is tasting the wine, she bricks him up and returns to the party. The score contains several popular arias and esembles including Angela's plaintive "You Don't Listen To Me Much," Anna's catalog aria "Maria in Madrid," and John's salute to good wines.
Because of unforeseen conflicts and issues, I Pagliacci and The Cask of Amontillado are being performed in place of the originally scheduled performance of Rossini's The Barber of Seville.
