BONJ Going Forward
2023 Annual Appeal

2022-2023 was an amazing season, thanks to your support and for being part of our journey. We continued to expand our repertoire with an unforgettable performance of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony #1. We expanded our community collaborations to include helping Life With Joy (adult autism) and Bridges (feeding the homeless) while continuing our work with Keys 2 Success (music to young Newark students), Morristown National Historical Park (celebration of the 90th Anniversary), Madison Community Arts Center (free summer concerts), Loyola Jesuit Center, Madison Rotary, and others. The Morris County Chamber of Commerce presented us with the 2023 award for “Innovative Program” at the annual nonprofit conference. Our conductor’s first commercial CD was released by Elegia Classics.

We presented concerts at Dolan Hall, Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, Madison Community Arts Center, Salvatore Minardi Salon, and Grace Church as we continued to bring music to the community.

We look to the start of a new year with optimism, hopefulness, and joy for what can be. Our 2023-2024 musical journey will include our 4-concert season; great internationally acclaimed artists; a musical mix of old favorites, new discoveries, and world premieres; collaborations with leading New Jersey and international organizations; performances in new and traditional places; and an increased online streaming presence

We look to the year ahead

  • November 12, 2023: Love and Magic: Our season opens on November 12 with a unique opportunity to hear Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s very first opera: Bastien und Bastienne. This work, composed when he was only twelve years old, is a charmingly delightful tale of country love and features a village soothsayer who sings an exciting but nonsensical incantation to supposedly help the lovers! Also on the program will be Overture to Le devin du village, composed by French writer/philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, whose work served as inspiration for Mozart’s opera. Dolan Hall, The Annunciation Center, Saint Elizabeth University, 2 Convent Road, Morristown, New Jersey.

  • January 21, 2024: Diversity of Beauty: For our annual January concert we return to one of our earliest concert venues – Morristown Unitarian Fellowship! The concert will feature a diversity of music old and new, but composers familiar and newly discovered. The concert will include works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, Teresa Carreño, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, and Ting Ho. Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, New Jersey.

  • April 14, 2024: Old Favorites and New Sounds: We will venture into the expressive music of the Romantic Era with Franz Schubert’s beautiful and passionate Symphony #8, The Unfinished, as well as Felix Mendelssohn’s great Violin Concerto, featuring BONJ violinist Alyson Whelan! Also on the program will be the World Premiere of Concerto for Vibraphone and Orchestra by New Jersey composer Peter Jarvis, featuring BONJ percussionist Jesse Gerbasi. Dolan Hall, The Annunciation Center, Saint Elizabeth University, 2 Convent Road, Morristown, New Jersey.

  • June 9, 2024: A Suite, A Serenade, A Symphony: Music of three eras featuring three different ensembles. The concert will open with Gustav Holst’s wonderful St Paul’s Suite, filled with familiar folk melodies. Antonin Dvořák’s Serenade for Winds will feature BONJ’s esteemed wind players. Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony #2 will provide an energetic close to a great season. Dolan Hall, The Annunciation Center, Saint Elizabeth University, 2 Convent Road, Morristown, New Jersey.

  • Community Collaboration: Musicians of the orchestra will perform at the Madison Community Arts Center on Friday/Saturday November 24/25 as part of the MACA Holiday Arts Festival. We will also perform in a special holiday streamed concert by Salvatore Minardi Salon in Madison, and First Night Morris. Other concerts are planned for Spring and Summer 2024

The Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey is New Jersey’s leading orchestra for community engagement and collaboration. With your help, we bring the music to retirement communities, to downtown Newark, to medical and health facilities, and to schools. We work with community organizations to help feed the homeless, to support programs for adult autism, to provide opportunities for young artists in underserved schools, to work with The National Park Service through collaborations with Morristown National Historical Park, to provide free concerts so all can enjoy the music together, to work internationally with arts and cultural institutions, and to share lives through music.

With such an exhilarating journey ahead, we invite you to join us as our annual drive begins.
