Love is in the air, but it might take a magic spell to make it happen in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Bastien und Bastienne.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed his first opera in 1768 at the age of 12! Even at this young age, Mozart was able to create a work of incredible charm, beauty, and excitement. It is the tale of a young shepherd (Bastien) and a young shepherdess (Bastienne) who somehow get a bit mixed up and require the advice and help of Colas, the village soothsayer, who might or might not actually be able to perform any magic. Despite some misunderstandings, love triumphs in the end.
Mozart's little opera was inspired by a similar French work - Le divan du village by philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. We will open our concert with the Overture and Pantomime from Rousseau's equally charming little work of musical theater.
Also on the program will be a flute concerto by Johann Joachim Quantz featuring flutist Laura Ferraro.
The cast for Mozart's opera will be the singers who brought Johann Sebastian Bach's charming Coffee Cantata to life in 2021. Timothy Maureen Cole is Bastienne, Dmitri Zigrino is Bastien, and Jason Adamo is Colas. BONJ Comprimarios Tom Loughman and Douglas Anderson will be villagers.
